The Dolomites are dramatic, but your trip does not have to be. Choose fewer places and leave space for weather, and the mountains can feel surprisingly calm.

One lake a day is enough

Mountain lakes are most magical early in the morning. Arrive before the crowds, pack a thermos and avoid trying to see three places before lunch.

Instead of a long list, choose one main stop and one backup. If clouds roll in, you will not feel disappointed; you will simply adjust.

What to pack

Mountain weather changes quickly even in summer. Bring layers, a hat, sunscreen, snacks and something waterproof. The photos will be better when you are not freezing.

The morning rule

The best light does not last long. Lay out your clothes the night before, stay close to your planned starting point and keep the morning only for tea and the road.

The Dolomites are not a race. They are an invitation to look slowly.
