Marrakesh is intense. It smells of mint, spice and warm dust, hums with hundreds of voices and sometimes asks for clearer boundaries. Give it time, and it also shows a quieter side.

Start with the riad

A good riad is more than accommodation in Marrakesh. It is a quiet courtyard to return to when the medina becomes too loud.

Do not plan too much on the first day. Walk the area, learn your way home and sit down for mint tea.

Markets with respect

Bargain politely, but do not be afraid to leave. If you do not want to buy, a smile and a clear no often help. Keep valuables tucked away and hold your phone a little more carefully.

Where to breathe

The gardens are a useful counterpoint to the medina. Go in the morning, bring water and plan a longer lunch afterward. Marrakesh is not a city to understand at sprint speed.

The best souvenir may not be ceramics, but the ability to slow down inside the noise.
